Making Our Neighborhood: Redlining, Gentrification and Housing in East Hollywood, is the creation of two journalists and storytellers in a predominantly immigrant neighborhood in Los Angeles, where nearly three-fourths of residents rent their housing. East Hollywood was formerly redlined by the federal government for containing Black and immigrant communities, and is now undergoing gentrification that is driving these same groups out. Authors Jimmy Recinos and Samanta Helou Hernandez explore these connections at length in a photographic and research-rich collection of articles, maps, and photo essays. Together these stories reveal how a neighborhood is made, how a neighborhood is lost, and how a neighborhood thrives.
