By the Shore of Lake Michigan is the English translation of Tomiko and Ryoukuyo Matsumoto's book of tanka, a traditional form of Japanese poetry. The book chronicles a 17-year period starting with the Issei couple's 1942 forced relocation from Los Angeles to Heart Mountain and through to their time as they settled in post-war Chicago.
